Hi all!
For appropriate website use for our students to use, I feel that the following would work wonderfully for linking local history, with the kalamazoo region in mind to how the students can talk about their area in the pen pal activity.
Kalamazoo Public Library (Local History)
Which is the local history buff's around here favorite way to locate old family information be it in person or on the go. They have a lot of interesting facts and documents as well as 3d items that students can look at via the site. My only concern is that I do not think it is appropriate for the younger students, and perhaps specific keyed in links that edit the page to just words and photos with no links would be more appropriate in some cases. We all know that kids like to click around and try to get to other places quickly with technology. (They just want to end up at the games, who am I kidding?).
Portage Library (Local History)
This site has a very nice scrolling timeline of how people got to the Portage area and how it was founded. I do feel that it would be a little boring for the students, but in terms of being able to directly quote from a website to give them an idea of how quickly things can be settled would be nice.
Kalamazoo Valley Museum (Local History)
This is by far my favorite site. It really gives students a physical sense of what kids their age were playing with, how life was, and how life would have been for them. It has the 3d touch that I think technology sometimes leaves to be desired.
All three of these links do not have ads on them, which is a plus, and are for the most part children and user friendly. There are some links that might not be age appropriate (I couldn't find any directly that I would have been leery of, but I am sure in the history of settling, there are some links that need to be carefully addressed so students have a kind heart when discussing).
What do you guys think? Do you think that these could be apparent in our lesson? The idea of globalization in relation to our Kalamazoo area?
I feel that the Kalamazoo Public Library really sets up our whole concept nicely while the Kalamazoo Valley Museum cite gives a physical touch to what students would be more interested in.
ALSO!! I have preloaded some blogs to be scheduled sent out to remind us of what is coming! Look out for them and by responding promptly we can breeze through this.
Little planning goes a long way!

I absolutely agree with you on these websites! I visited all three and I think without ads distracting kids, these are very helpful. I love the idea of the museum and library for our lesson. These go perfectly with our topic.
